Kayser Specialty performed only a Detailed Preservation of the "FLINT FLYER" and not a restoration.

The "Flint Flyer" was named by Eric Dahlquist in his April 1966 Hot Rod magazine article "Blueprinting Buicks for Action" Top Rung or also-ran! Super-setup procedures on the 401/425

Buick Engineering in Flint, MI built twelve of these special Drag-racing 1966 Gran Sports for select placement in twelve Buick Zones across the U.S.A. where Drag race oriented Buick Dealers could letter it up to go racing and generate local publicity for the Buick brand. Buick Engineering built the 401 CID V-8 engines; the first in GM with 11.0:1 Compression domed pistons and they also tricked out Buick Super Turbine 300 transmissions.

The 11.0:1 Mixture was fed into the 401 Buick engine by GM's Rochester Products first use of the Model 4MC Qudrajet carburetor #7044262. Only the 1966 carbs had a dime sized embossed metal plate inserted in the side of the carb body and these are extremely rare!

This Gran Sport was delivered and sold to Bob Altman at Hosmer Buick-Pontiac in Bartow, FL on April 7, 1966 by salesman "Bill".

Buick only intended to loan these secretly prepared Gran Sports for the balance of the year and then collect them up and crush them. A few of these Gran Sports escaped the crusher and Hosmer Buick's Service Manager Bob Altman bought his one to race hard and he parked it for good in 1967 after 133 local races around the Tampa, Bartow, Sebring, Florida area.

Altman's Gran Sport was specially equipped with the extremely rare Skylark Metallic Racing Brakes requiring cast iron finned brake drums, a 4.30 Positraction Rear End, Delco Super-lift Shocks in the rear and Bob fitted an assortment of extra Stewart-Warner Green-line gages, electric fuel pump and a G-Meter.
